The Dead 2

Image
Directed by the Ford brothers, the Dead 2 is a zombie movie with a twist it's  set in India. The movie is a sequel to The Dead (2010) depicting two soldier’s attempts to survive a zombie epidemic sweeping through Africa. Howard and Jon Ford deliver the goods this time. Nicholas Burton (Joseph Millson) is an American engineer working as a contractor on a wind farm, in love with an Indian girl Ishaani Sharma whom he impregnated. This affair of theirs enrages Ishaani’s stereotypical conservative father who wants her to marry a man of his choice. But disaster strikes in the form of an infected sailor returning from Somalia. Havoc ensues as he bites his way through quite a few bystanders. Nicholas has to be the white knight on a Royal Enfield to save Ishaani from the slavering hordes of inhumanity. He meets a lively, but over-enthusiastic orphan named Javed, who becomes his companion and guide through 300 km of anticipation and abject terror. The movie is pretty average i

My Hero Academia Season-1

My Hero Academia Season-1: Of Grit and Determination   This is my first review of Japanese anime on this blog. I'll be dealing with the first season of Boku No Hero Academia or My Hero Academia. Quick on the heels of superhero-themed anime such as One Punch Man and Mob Psycho 100, this series depicts a world were superhero powers are abundant, a world where more than 80%of the population have some kind of superpower or the other. An incredible world isn't it? Well, this tale is about one among the other 20%. Izuku Midoriya, our protagonist grows up adoring All Might, the Symbol of Peace . But unluckily for him, he doesn't have any Quirk or superpower. Quirkless in a world where Quirks are the norm, he was bullied relentlessly by the intemperate Katsuki Bakugo. But when he intervenes in an incident involving a villain, he's offered a chance at getting into the famous hero-prep school called UA. He has to undergo a trial by fire and plenty of broken bones before he ge

Hot Takes: Petta & Mikhael

Image
Hot Takes   Hot takes are reviews of movies released recently. These are movies that do not merit a thematic analysis and are not the usual reflections that I put out on here. Petta   Written and directed by Karthik Subbaraj of the Pizza fame, Petta follows in the tradition of Rajnepics starting with Kabaali. The action blockbuster (with a collection of 125.8 cr as of this writing) depicts the life of Kaali (Rajnikanth), a hostel warden dealing with a rather unruly crowd in a predominantly Tamil-speaking college in what appears to be Darjeeling. Being the righteous man he is , he puts an end to endemic ragging of freshers by Michael ( Bobby Shima), the no-good son of a non-good contractor, while intriguing on the behalf of the affable Anwar (Sananth Reddy) in his romace with the lovely Anu (Megha Prakash). A few fights and a romance later , a blast from the past hits Kaali ,forever changing the winds of the story-line. Rajnikanth does not fail to impress in his role

In Memoriam

As many of those who knew me through my formative years in school know, our friend Ishaan passed away today. This came as a shock to me, on the back of a year of deaths of those close to me. I hoped that this year would be a new beginning, of healing, but it was not to be. I'd always know that goodbyes were inevitable, but this was too soon. One of the brightest amongst us has passed into the hereafter. We can only curse God bless his soul. See you on the other side.

The Maze Runner (Books)

Image
James Dashner’s the Maze Runner trilogy is one of the more realistic successors to The Hunger Games series, set in a post-apocalyptic world laid to waste by a zombie epidemic called the Flare. Thomas, the protagonist, after traversing through a treacherous path paved by violence and betrayal, choses to forgo WICKED’s offer of retrieving his memory. Fearing a revival of his old self he breaks out of WICKED’s base with his bosom buddies, enlisting the help of the terrorist organization the Right Hand, creating the background for a brutal and beautiful conclusion to this series. The following contains spoilers. (8/10) Character Analysis Thomas is definitely one of the best characters crafted in this story, avoiding the trope of the Idiot Hero, endowed with both brains and brawn, and suffering from a serious trust deficit. Teresa being Thomas’s equal and opposite half, shares Thomas’s capabilities, but nothing else. She is vindictive and subtle, conveying the image of

Logan (Movie)

Image
This is my first review.Enjoy! Perhaps no movie has gone as far as James Mangolds’ Logan in deconstructing the myth surrounding superheroes. In a setting reminiscent of the last days of the Greek hero Jason on his crumbling ship the Argo , the movie shows a weary Logan(Hugh Jackman), struggling to care for Professor Xavier( Ian Mckellan) in a world hostile to mutants.   His mundane life is given new meaning when he meets a young mutant girl, Laura (Dafne Keen). The film is surprisingly deep for one based on a comic book, dealing with many important themes including illegal experimentation, child soldiers, and eugenics. There are numerous times where Logan is forced out of this apathy to ‘stand up for the little guy’, against various big guns from the local real estate mogul to Transigen corporation which is hunting down the girl. Even the very idea of a safe haven for mutants in Canada, called Eden could or could not be an allusion to recent events. On Violence For a m
